The Full Belly Bowl

by Jim Aylesworth
Illustrated by Wendy Anderson Halperin.
(Atheneum, 1999)

In a literary retelling of a traditional tale with elements of the classic magic porridge pot stories -- an old man who is always hungry lives with his cat at the edge of a forest. When the old man rescues a tiny man from being gobbled up by a fox, the tiny man presents the old man with a Full Belly Bowl. In the following pages the man and his cat must learn how to properly use the bowl -- and how to store it. A great story.

French edition of The Full Belly Bowl wins the Prix Bernard Versele 2002, for picture books, in Belgium. This award is a well-established prize which is awarded every year by the Belgian Ligue des Familles (League of Families), and the jury is composed of several thousand children. All the children will be present for the prize ceremony on Friday, June 7 (2002) in Brussels.
Starred Review -- "...this book is a feast for the eyes. There's a real story here, too, written with a folktale feel, humor, and touches of magic and message....A wonderful book to share and a joy to peruse" -- Booklist, November 1, 1999.

Starred Review -- "Aylesworth's nimble story keeps the action going, transcending cautionary tale to deliver an amusing lark. Aylesworth and Halperin make a wonderful team: like the magic bowl, their talents runneth over." - Publishers Weekly, November 8, 1999.

"A concise and covertly cautionary original folktale is complemented by precise and charming colored-pencil illustrations in this wholly delightful book." -- Kirkus Associates, 1999.
