What an Honor!

Author Jim Aylesworth and illustrator Barbara McClintock were honored with a 2015 Sydney Taylor Book Award for younger readers for their picture book My Grandfather's Coat (Scholastic Press). The collaborators, along with other winners, were presented with their award at a banquet held on June 23 in Silver Spring, Md. The Sydney Taylor Book Awards are given annually to children's books that convey the Jewish experience.

"Another project - a new Jim Aylsworth/Barbara McClintock venture! Jim has written a version of the old Yiddish tale, Something out of Nothing, about a tailor who makes a coat which wears out, then a jacket, then a vest, and on and on until all that's left is.... a story.

And what a lovely interpretation of the tale; it's all about a family, and the passage of time. This is really a brilliant turn of storytelling on Jim's part, and I'm so thrilled to be involved in thinking about the pictures, and making the dummy book drawings. I'm placing the setting in rural Connecticut, where there was a large community of Jewish farmers who moved 'from the old country' as well as from parts of Brooklyn and the lower east side in the early part of the 20th century."
